French Authorities Take Action
On Wednesday, French law enforcement apprehended a 22-year-old man linked to a significant cyberattack that targeted the email servers of the French Interior Ministry last week.
The authorities have not disclosed much information about the suspect, other than his age and prior convictions for similar cyber offenses earlier this year. Reports indicate that he has a history of launching cyberattacks against government entities.
The attack, which occurred on December 11, compromised the email systems of the Interior Ministry and affected an undisclosed number of files. A hacking group claimed responsibility shortly after, alleging they had stolen data belonging to millions of French citizens.
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that authorities now have a clearer understanding of the situation one week post-attack. “A few days ago, I mentioned we were uncertain about any compromises. Now we know there have been compromises, but we are still assessing their extent,” Mr. Nunez explained.
According to Mr. Nunez, it is likely that employees inadvertently facilitated access to sensitive files by sharing information and passwords via messaging apps and email. He noted that while authorities acted swiftly enough to mitigate the exposure of millions of data pieces, the breach remains considerable.
The minister also announced that an administrative investigation into the breach is underway and that the National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties has been informed.
As of Wednesday, Mr. Nunez confirmed that no ransom demands had been made by the hacking group responsible for the attack.
