Bragg’s Reelection Victory

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg achieved a decisive victory in his reelection bid on Tuesday, garnering 74% of the votes. His win comes despite a reputation for being lenient on crime, often linked to his association with liberal financier George Soros.

Bragg soundly defeated Republican candidate Maud Maron and independent challenger Diana Florence.

The Manhattan DA is recognized as one of the leading “progressive prosecutors” alongside Larry Krasner, the Philadelphia District Attorney, who also won reelection after a competitive primary.

Bragg is widely known for prosecuting former President Donald Trump, who faced charges related to hush money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign. The trial resulted in Trump being convicted on 34 counts of business fraud, leading to political opponents labeling him a “felon” during his 2024 campaign.

Despite his focus on prosecuting gun violence and sexual crimes, Bragg has faced criticism for his perceived leniency towards offenders. An internal memo from shortly after he took office in 2021 instructed prosecutors to reduce some felony charges and avoid seeking prison sentences in various cases.

Apart from Trump’s case, Bragg also pursued manslaughter charges against subway rider Daniel Penny, who fatally subdued homeless man Jordan Neely. This incident drew national attention amid rising subway crime rates and discussions about race, ultimately resulting in Penny’s acquittal by a jury.
