Protest in Venice Leads to Fines

Greta Thunberg, along with other activists from Extinction Rebellion, has been fined and temporarily banned from Venice following a demonstration where they dumped green dye into the Grand Canal.

The group staged their protest on the Rialto Bridge on Saturday, pouring the dye while displaying a banner that read “Stop Ecocide” in Italian. As a result of their actions, each activist received a fine of 150 euros (approximately $173.41) and were prohibited from entering Venice for 48 hours. Their banners and equipment were also confiscated.

Luca Zaia, the president of the Veneto region, criticized the protest on social media, stating that it demonstrated a lack of respect for Venice’s history and fragility. He expressed his astonishment at Thunberg’s involvement, suggesting that the protest aimed more at gaining attention than raising environmental awareness.

This demonstration coincided with the conclusion of COP30, an annual U.N. climate change conference held in Brazil this year. Activists also targeted other Italian cities such as Bologna, Genoa, Milan, Padua, Palermo, Parma, Trieste, and Turin by pouring dye into local water bodies.

Extinction Rebellion claimed Italy was chosen for this protest due to its collaboration with other nations to dilute key proposals at COP30. The final agreements did not include a phaseout plan for fossil fuels—an outcome that disappointed many environmental advocates.

A local resident named Paola remarked that Italy has consistently obstructed ambitious climate measures during significant global summits aimed at addressing climate change and social issues.
