Stock Performance Following Earnings Call
Palantir Technologies, a defense and software firm, has seen its stock drop over 9% in just two days following a surprisingly positive earnings call on Monday night. This downturn has prompted CEO Alex Karp to defend the company’s valuation.
In an interview on CNBC, Karp addressed analysts who have labeled Palantir and similar companies at the forefront of artificial intelligence as overvalued. He criticized their skepticism, asserting that they are attempting to undermine the AI revolution.
The company reported a record revenue growth rate of 63% year-over-year, with significant gains in its commercial sector.
Financial analyst Michael Burry, known for his role in predicting the housing market crash, disclosed that he holds a short position against Palantir due to fears of an impending AI market bubble. His hedge fund, Scion Asset Management, acquired over $1 billion in market options that profit from declining share prices.
Karp dismissed Burry’s concerns and emphasized that Palantir’s market value is supported by retail investors rather than institutional ones like Burry. He noted that Palantir ranks as one of the top-performing stocks in the S&P 500 this year.
Karp expressed gratitude towards retail investors during the earnings call, stating that they are crucial to the company’s success. He remarked humorously about those who missed out on investing in Palantir.
Burry’s short positions also include Nvidia, which recently partnered with Palantir to create an integrated technology stack for operational AI. Nvidia has achieved unprecedented market value as it capitalizes on AI advancements across various sectors.
Karp criticized Burry’s investment strategy as akin to market manipulation and defended Palantir’s performance metrics as unparalleled in their industry.
While discussing defense contracts, Karp highlighted the U.S. Army’s transition to using Palantir’s platform “Vantage” as its primary data host. He asserted that defense clients are making pivotal decisions that will transform military data infrastructure.
Karp acknowledged challenges regarding transparency but insisted that Palantir’s contributions are vital and transformative within military operations. He also touched upon controversial aspects of their work with agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and foreign governments such as Ukraine and Israel.
