New Factory Marks Significant Investment

Camden, Arkansas — The global demand for missiles is on the rise, and Camden is set to play a pivotal role in this expanding industry.

This past Tuesday, the small town of approximately 10,000 residents, located 100 miles south of Little Rock, celebrated the groundbreaking of a new $400 million solid rocket motor and propulsion factory. This facility will be operated by L3Harris Technologies, a prominent player in the defense sector.

L3Harris has already added 500 jobs over the past year as part of its preparations for this new factory. This initiative aligns with the broader U.S. defense strategy to enhance missile capabilities. According to L3Harris, this facility will be among their most advanced, designed to boost efficiency in response to increasing global needs for strategic weapon systems.

“This project represents a generational investment that underscores L3Harris’ commitment to enhancing America’s ‘arsenal of freedom,’” stated Christopher Kubasik, chairman and CEO of L3Harris. “In collaboration with Arkansas state officials, we are enhancing our capabilities to safeguard our nation and allies while deterring potential threats.”

The term “arsenal of freedom” references Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s speech on November 7, where he urged the defense industry to adopt a proactive investment approach rather than merely responding to Pentagon contracts.

During his address, Hegseth described the current situation as “a moment of mounting urgency,” emphasizing the need for changes in how U.S. military equipment is deployed amid escalating global threats.

The Camden facility currently serves as a key producer of guided multiple launch rocket system munitions (GMLRS), which have been crucial for Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities supported by the U.S. This highlights an essential requirement within the U.S. arsenal.

“Solid rocket motors are integral components powering everything from tactical missiles to missile defense interceptors,” explained Ken Bedingfield, CFO of L3Harris during Tuesday’s ceremony. “These elements are vital for our national defense.”

An exclusive tour revealed that this manufacturing site was originally established over 40 years ago by Aerojet Rocketdyne on land previously used as a Navy depot from World War II. After acquiring Aerojet Rocketdyne in 2023, L3Harris has committed significant resources toward upgrading these facilities.

L3Harris currently produces over 115,000 solid rocket motors annually at its Camden site. The new factory will further increase output through advanced robotic systems and automated quality inspections.

The integration of autonomous ground vehicles will streamline motor movement throughout production processes,” Bedingfield added..
