Amazon is set to refund its Prime customers up to $51 as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

To qualify for an automatic refund, customers must have signed up for Amazon Prime in the U.S. through the retailer’s shipping selection or checkout pages, the universal Prime landing page, or during the Prime Video enrollment process between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025.

Additionally, consumers must have utilized three or fewer benefits associated with their Amazon Prime membership, according to the FTC.

The settlement was reached in September after the FTC alleged that Amazon subscribed customers to Prime without their consent by using confusing interfaces on its website and apps. The company also made it challenging for users to unsubscribe.

As part of this agreement, Amazon is required to pay a $1 billion penalty—the largest ever imposed for an alleged violation of FTC rules—and provide $1.5 billion in refunds. While Amazon has agreed to this settlement, it maintains that it did not engage in any wrongdoing and asserts compliance with legal standards.

In a statement regarding the settlement, Amazon emphasized its commitment to following the law: “Amazon and our executives have always followed the law, and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers. We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership.”

The refund process began on November 12 and will continue until December 24. Eligible customers will be contacted via email and can receive their refunds through PayPal or Venmo. The FTC advises recipients to accept these refunds within 15 days.

If individuals do not respond to the email or fail to accept their automatic refund via PayPal or Venmo, a check will be mailed to their default shipping address used during their Prime subscription setup. The FTC encourages those receiving checks to cash them within 60 days.

After December 24, Amazon plans to initiate a claims process for other affected customers.

An Amazon spokesperson noted that those eligible for claims but not automatically refunded will be informed between December 24 and January 23, 2026.
