Light Show Marks Historic Anniversary

A New Year’s Eve light display at the Washington Monument will transform the iconic obelisk into a candle, celebrating the United States’ 250th anniversary.

The inaugural night of this event, organized by Freedom 250—a nonpartisan nonprofit founded by President Trump—will commence at 7 p.m. on Wednesday and continue until 12:06 a.m. on Thursday.

The candle projection will reach an impressive height of 250 feet, symbolizing the nation’s quarter-millennium milestone, according to Freedom 250.

From Thursday through Monday, additional presentations will be projected onto the Washington Monument each evening from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., showcasing key moments in American history.

“The illumination of the Washington Monument marks the beginning of a momentous year for our nation—250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. We invite every American—and every friend of America—to join this historic celebration of the triumph of the American spirit,” stated Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250.

In conjunction with Freedom 250’s events, after midnight in Times Square, America250—a congressional commission—will host a second drop of the Times Square Ball. This ball will be illuminated in national colors and will feature a commemorative video presentation followed by a release of 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti. The event will conclude with Ray Charles’ rendition of “America the Beautiful,” as reported by America250.
