President Trump pardons two turkeys

During the 78th annual National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation at the White House, President Trump granted pardons to two North Carolina turkeys named Gobble and Waddle.

Gobble was named this year’s National Thanksgiving Turkey, while Waddle served as the alternate. Both birds were spared from becoming part of the Thanksgiving feast.

The president humorously suggested he considered naming the turkeys Chuck and Nancy, a nod to Democratic leaders Charles E. Schumer and Nancy Pelosi, but decided against it, stating he would “never pardon them.”

Trump also joked about President Biden’s turkey pardons from last year, claiming they were invalid due to Biden’s use of an autopen. He stated that Peach and Blossom had been located and were en route to being processed before he intervened.

This year’s turkeys were described by Trump as a “handsome” pair, with Gobble weighing in at 52 pounds and Waddle at 50 pounds. They hatched in July and traveled to Washington for the event.

As Trump issued his “unconditional pardon” to Gobble, who was being handled by Jay Jandrain, chairman of the National Turkey Federation, he noted that Waddle was “missing in action” during the ceremony.

The two turkeys enjoyed a night at the Willard InterContinental Hotel before returning to North Carolina State University as turkey ambassadors.

Leslee Oden, president of the National Turkey Federation, shared that Gobble and Waddle had a wonderful life on a farm. She humorously mentioned that they had “got into the minibar” during their hotel stay.

Pardoning turkeys has been a tradition since former President George H.W. Bush made it official in 1989.

The event shifted from celebrating turkeys to Trump discussing his administration’s achievements, including lower consumer costs and crime policies. He criticized Chicago’s leadership while calling out Governor J.B. Pritzker for not allowing federal assistance in addressing crime issues.

While expressing his desire to lose weight, Trump emphasized that he wouldn’t be indulging in Gobble or Waddle this Thanksgiving. He concluded with hopes for all Americans to enjoy time with family and friends while renewing faith in God’s providence.
