Representative Bennie G. Thompson, the leading Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, expressed his backing on Friday for an initiative to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

The lawmaker from Mississippi accused Ms. Noem of having “enriched herself” at taxpayers’ expense, disregarding congressional laws, defying court orders, and obstructing congressional oversight. He characterized these actions as an abuse of power and a breach of her oath of office.

“Thus, we must compile evidence and initiate the impeachment process. This is not a step we take lightly, but it is also a responsibility we cannot overlook. Rest assured that accountability is forthcoming,” stated Mr. Thompson.

He endorsed the impeachment resolution introduced earlier this week by Illinois Democrat Representative Robin Kelly.

Ms. Kelly outlined three main charges: obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust, and self-dealing.

While impeachment seems unlikely with the Republican Party controlling the House, Mr. Thompson’s endorsement signals that Ms. Noem could become a target if Democrats regain control in the upcoming November elections.

This situation mirrors what former Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas faced during his tenure as President Biden’s DHS chief.

After Republicans took control of the House in 2022, he became a target and was ultimately impeached—marking him as the first sitting Cabinet official to face such action.

The accusations against Mr. Mayorkas were notably similar to those directed at Ms. Noem, including breaches of public trust and noncompliance with legal mandates.

The Senate dismissed the impeachment case against Mr. Mayorkas without conducting a trial when it was under Democratic control.

In response to impeachment discussions, Ms. Noem has downplayed concerns, asserting her focus remains on her responsibilities.

This month has seen heightened anger towards Homeland Security following the death of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen who died during an encounter with an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis.

The incident has polarized public opinion; supporters of former President Trump argue that Good failed to comply with orders before driving toward the officer, justifying his actions. Conversely, opponents contend that the officer acted too hastily and could have avoided using lethal force.
