Democrats Demand Action Against Homeland Security Secretary

Democratic lawmakers are intensifying their calls for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, citing her role in fostering a confrontational atmosphere that has led to escalating tensions between immigration authorities and the public. This outcry follows a tragic incident last week in Minnesota, where a woman was shot dead, and two others were injured in Oregon.

The legislators have expressed their desire for Ms. Noem to resign or be dismissed by President Trump, but they are prepared to pursue impeachment if necessary. These demands are not new; during her previous appearance at a House hearing in December, several Democrats urged her to step down. However, the urgency has increased following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis, just one day before another shooting involving a Border Patrol agent in Oregon.

In response to the Minneapolis shooting, Representative Robin Kelly announced plans to file articles of impeachment against Ms. Noem, accusing her of obstruction of justice, violating public trust, and engaging in self-dealing. Other lawmakers have voiced support for these efforts while encouraging Ms. Noem to resign first.

Representative Brad Schneider from Illinois stated, “The killing of Renee Good is not simply the result of one officer’s actions. As secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem is responsible for setting standards and oversight that govern ICE operations. She has abjectly failed in that responsibility.”

The Department of Homeland Security quickly dismissed calls for Ms. Noem’s resignation as frivolous during such serious times. In a statement, they criticized Rep. Kelly’s impeachment plans as more focused on publicity than addressing crime issues within her district.

As Democrats hold a minority position in the House, their impeachment efforts may struggle to gain momentum; however, it could become a significant campaign issue leading up to November’s midterm elections. Should Democrats regain control of the chamber, these efforts might gain traction.

A former member of Congress and governor of South Dakota, Ms. Noem has been an outspoken advocate for the administration’s immigration policies and has frequently visited hotspots to promote progress on border security initiatives.

A recent YouGov poll indicated that she holds one of the lowest approval ratings among top Trump aides at 33%, trailing behind other cabinet members.

During an event at the border on Wednesday, when asked about her job’s challenges, Ms. Noem responded confidently: “Nothing’s hard about this job… I absolutely love it.” The role she occupies is often regarded as one of the most challenging within any administration due to its complexities and controversies surrounding immigration policy.
