Wallaby’s Great Escape

A wallaby that made a daring escape from a New Jersey animal sanctuary was safely returned after being spotted by a family at a Walmart.

The male wallaby, named Rex, slipped out of his enclosure on Monday at Lots of Love Farm in Williamstown, located approximately 24 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The sanctuary shared the news on Facebook.

On Tuesday, several individuals joined the search for Rex before he was ultimately found.

Ron Layden, the owner of the petting zoo and sanctuary, explained to South Jersey Media that due to the cold weather, he had brought Rex into the barn. Unfortunately, he created a makeshift cage that somehow remained unlocked.

In an enthusiastic update on Facebook, Lots of Love Farm expressed gratitude for the help they received: “With the help of some really cool kids and a really cool dad, we caught Rex at Walmart!! He is home safe and sound.” The identities of those who assisted were not disclosed.

Witness Michelle Evangelista recounted how the young men who helped catch Rex approached her with questions about his whereabouts. They had a net in their car but opted to use food instead to coax him closer. They managed to secure him by his tail.

Lots of Love Farm is situated just half a mile from Walmart. The facility was closed on Wednesday and Thursday but plans to reopen on Friday for Rex’s “welcome home party,” as announced by the sanctuary.
