Senator Sanders warns of AI’s impact
Senator Bernie Sanders has raised concerns about the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the significant threats it poses to American workers and society. He argues that the billionaires behind this technology are primarily driven by profit and power, rather than the welfare of the public.
During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the independent senator from Vermont criticized Congress for not adequately addressing the economic and social disruptions that AI could bring, especially for workers at risk of job loss.
Sanders pointed out that younger individuals are increasingly relying on AI for emotional support instead of seeking human connections, which raises important questions about how this technology is affecting humanity as a whole.
He noted that some experts predict AI may soon exceed human intelligence, making previously dismissed scenarios more conceivable. “The science fiction fear of AI running the world is not quite so outrageous a concept as some have thought it was,” he stated.
The emergence of AI has sparked a growing discussion regarding its advantages and disadvantages, particularly whether elected officials—many from the Baby Boomer generation—are responding with sufficient urgency to these developments.
Even those skeptical about AI acknowledge its potential to enhance healthcare, education, and drug development. Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent computer scientist known as the “Godfather of AI,” remarked on CNN’s “State of the Union” that while there are promising aspects to AI, there are also serious concerns that need more attention.
Hinton mentioned that some companies have been more responsible than others in balancing safety with profitability. He urged government action to evaluate chatbots following their association with suicide cases.
Sanders specifically called out Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Peter Thiel as influential figures heavily investing in AI. He argued that their primary aim is to amass wealth and power. He referenced Musk’s predictions about job elimination due to automation and Gates’ comments suggesting humans might become unnecessary for many tasks in the future.
“If there are no jobs and humans won’t be needed for most things, how do people get an income to feed their families or pay rent?” Sanders questioned. “There has not been one serious word of discussion in Congress about that reality.”
