Incident Overview

In a dramatic encounter on Wednesday morning, federal immigration agents in Maryland fired at a driver who allegedly attempted to run them over, according to local police reports.

Anne Arundel County Police responded to the scene in the 500 block of West Court in Glen Burnie shortly before 11 a.m., where two individuals were injured during the incident.

The Department of Homeland Security indicated that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was conducting an enforcement operation in the vicinity when they identified two undocumented immigrants in a white van. The driver, Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, a Portuguese national, and his passenger, Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, from El Salvador, were approached by the agents.

The officers instructed Sousa-Martins to turn off his engine; however, he refused and attempted to escape. According to ICE officials, he then used his vehicle as a weapon by ramming it into several ICE vehicles and driving directly at the officers.

The agents responded by opening fire on Sousa-Martins’ vehicle, resulting in him being struck. Following this, he crashed into a wooded area behind some homes, which also left Serrano-Esquivel injured.

Both individuals were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore acknowledged the shooting involving ICE agents via social media platform X. He stated that as more information becomes available regarding the incident, state officials will coordinate with local authorities and offer support to the community.

The Anne Arundel County police department is collaborating with the FBI to investigate this shooting incident further.
