Resistance to AI Technology

Merriam-Webster has named “slop” as its word of the year, reflecting a rising skepticism towards artificial intelligence. This term captures the backlash against energy-intensive data centers, synthetic actors in commercials, and a flood of online misinformation.

Shortly after taking office, President Trump signed an executive order aimed at positioning the United States as the leader in AI technology, competing primarily with China. However, this initiative is met with increasing public apprehension regarding job losses and societal degradation due to AI advancements.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed his doubts about the benefits of AI during a recent discussion on its development in the state. Many Americans are becoming disillusioned with the promises made by proponents of artificial intelligence.

In a notable incident, McDonald’s retracted an AI-generated holiday advertisement that viewers found unappealing. The ad featured artificial characters lamenting over chaotic Christmas scenarios while promoting a fictional McDonald’s setting.

The rapid proliferation of AI-generated content led Merriam-Webster to define “slop” as low-quality digital material produced en masse by artificial intelligence. Social media is now flooded with such content, leaving users questioning what is real.

A report from Billboard highlighted that AI-generated music has entered mainstream discussions and competes directly with human-created works. Zebracat, an AI software firm, estimates that 40% of social media videos are now generated by AI.

A Pew Research Center survey revealed that many adults are increasingly wary of AI’s role in daily life and its potential to harm interpersonal relationships. Additionally, concerns have arisen regarding the safety of children interacting with chatbots; Character.AI recently restricted access for users under 18 following troubling incidents involving its platforms.

Governor DeSantis articulated his opposition to unregulated AI at an event hosted at Florida Atlantic University, labeling it as “mindless slop.” Meanwhile, President Trump continues to advocate for rapid advancements in U.S. AI capabilities.

The debate over how best to manage artificial intelligence is intensifying. Some local governments are taking measures to halt or slow down the establishment of large data centers due to concerns about environmental impact and resource consumption.

Civic unrest has led some communities to reject plans for massive data centers due to fears over noise pollution and energy costs. In Virginia, residents voted out council members who approved a large Amazon data center project.

A report from McKinsey Global Institute suggests that while existing technologies could automate up to 57% of work hours, this does not necessarily equate to job losses but rather a shift toward collaboration between humans and machines.
