Concerns Over LGBTQ Content in Children’s Programming

The Trump administration is being urged to examine the LGBTQ content present in Netflix’s children’s programming before approving the streaming service’s merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, according to the Concerned Women for America (CWA).

The conservative organization has raised alarms after discovering that 41% of Netflix shows deemed suitable for children feature LGBTQ themes, including transgender characters and same-sex couples.

A report titled “LGBTQ Messaging Pervasive in Netflix Children’s Programming” revealed that both G-rated programs and TV-Y7 shows contained 41% LGBTQ elements, a statistic that CWA President Penny Nance described as “shocking.”

Nance expressed concerns about Netflix becoming a dominant force in streaming following its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which includes popular franchises like Harry Potter. She stated, “The fact that Netflix actively drives the expansion of LGBTQ+ themes into children’s programming should make parents and regulators reconsider the implications of such market influence.”

In October, Netflix faced backlash after Elon Musk encouraged his followers on social media to cancel their subscriptions for their children’s well-being, resulting in an estimated $15 billion drop in market value.

The #CancelNetflix movement was sparked by a post regarding a lead transgender character in the animated series “Dead End: Paranormal Park,” which aired for 20 episodes before its cancellation in 2023 but remains accessible on the platform.

The merger deal is still subject to federal antitrust scrutiny, with President Trump indicating his intention to be involved in the decision-making process.

Nance has called for an independent council representing parental interests to participate in evaluating the merger, warning that if approved, it could allow Netflix to further its controversial approach to content moderation aimed at children.

A recent study by CWA analyzed 326 Netflix series rated G and TV-Y7, revealing that within G-rated programs, 18% featured explicit LGBTQ content while 19% included meta references. In TV-Y7 shows, explicit content accounted for 24%.

Netflix has been proactive in enhancing LGBTQ representation by collaborating with institutions like the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School since 2021 to monitor inclusion across its scripted films and series.

The platform offers robust parental controls that enable families to restrict access to certain programs based on personal beliefs.

While some children’s content on Netflix is original, others are licensed from various providers as part of their commitment to offering diverse viewing options. Warner Bros. Discovery contributes brands such as Cartoon Network and Discovery Kids along with all eight Harry Potter films.

Ironic circumstances arise as J.K. Rowling stands out as a prominent critic of transgender ideology while her works remain central within this discussion.

Nance argues against claims of underrepresentation of LGBTQ characters in entertainment by stating that Netflix’s offerings significantly exceed real-world demographics. She noted an increase in children’s shows featuring LGBTQ themes since 2021.
