Senator’s Concerns Over FDA Delays

Senator Bill Cassidy expressed his frustration on Sunday regarding the Trump administration’s handling of safety studies for the abortion drug mifepristone, suggesting that it is not being prioritized.

During an appearance on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Cassidy accused the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of stalling its review process for mifepristone, a medication commonly used in abortions.

“It seems as if it’s taken a long time to get that study up and going, which suggests to me that it’s not a priority,” said the Louisiana Republican. He emphasized that this issue should be at the forefront for those in the pro-life community.

Cassidy noted that both he and other pro-life advocates are disappointed with the lack of transparency from FDA Commissioner Marty Makary. He stated, “If you want to reassure the American people about something that is really top of mind, this is where they should be going.”

The ongoing issue has created friction between President Trump and pro-life supporters. After the 2024 election, Trump indicated to Time magazine his commitment to ensuring that access to abortion pills remains unblocked by the FDA.

In October, the FDA approved another generic version of mifepristone, which angered pro-life groups. Meanwhile, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Makary had previously promised a review of safety data.

Despite these promises, Senate Republicans have voiced their frustration over what they perceive as a slow pace and lack of transparency from Dr. Makary, who recently cited ongoing litigation as a reason for withholding information.

Dr. Makary assured lawmakers that while they cannot fully respond at this time, they are reviewing evidence thoroughly: “This review will help ensure that the FDA’s decisions are grounded in Gold Standard Science and rigorous, transparent, and objective evidence.”

This situation escalated after reports emerged suggesting Dr. Makary instructed agency officials to delay studies until after midterm elections—a move critics argue was intended to protect Republicans from political backlash.

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America has called on Trump’s administration to dismiss Makary due to perceived inaction amid rising concerns over abortion drugs’ impact on women’s health.

Senator Josh Hawley also demanded answers regarding whether an independent safety review was being conducted: “This is totally unacceptable…the danger of playing politics with women’s health cannot be overstated.” On Sunday, Cassidy mentioned that Dr. Makary assured him efforts were underway to expedite study preparations but expressed dissatisfaction with progress thus far.
