Incident Overview

A mother from Tennessee is in legal trouble after her two young children, aged 2 and 4, ingested her THCA gummies, which she had legally purchased.

On November 28, authorities were alerted to a potential overdose at the home of Candice Hickson, 43, located in Milan, Tennessee, approximately 100 miles northeast of Memphis. Upon arrival, police discovered the children unresponsive.

According to reports from WBBJ-TV, Ms. Hickson stated that her children consumed THCA gummies stored in her bathroom. While these gummies are legal for adults to buy and possess, they are not intended for children. Ms. Hickson was unable to specify how many gummies each child had eaten.

The two children were transported to a hospital in Memphis and were released within 48 hours following treatment.

During the investigation, Ms. Hickson tested positive for methamphetamine. Consequently, the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services took custody of her children as part of the ongoing legal proceedings.

The THCA gummies involved in this incident contain a nonpsychoactive precursor to THC and are permissible under Tennessee law for individuals aged 21 and older. Unlike THC-infused products that are illegal in the state, these gummies are derived from hemp and contain only trace amounts of other cannabinoid substances.

In addition to child endangerment charges, Ms. Hickson faces neglect charges with bail set at $25,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on December 16.
