Democrats Request Flight Logs
Members of the House Judiciary Committee are urging FBI Director Kash Patel to provide the flight logs for his agency’s aircraft. This request follows reports alleging that he used the jet for personal outings, including a so-called ‘date night’ with his girlfriend.
In their correspondence to Mr. Patel, the Democrats highlighted several trips, such as attending a concert at a wrestling event at Penn State University, visiting an upscale hunting resort in Texas, and golfing in Scotland.
Representative Jamie Raskin from Maryland and Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove from California expressed their concerns about taxpayer money being used for what they describe as Mr. Patel’s leisure activities. They questioned why citizens should bear the costs associated with his personal travel on government jets.
This inquiry follows various media reports indicating that Mr. Patel chartered the FBI’s Gulfstream G550 for trips related to his girlfriend, country music singer Alexis Wilkins, as well as other fundraising and sporting events.
Mr. Patel has characterized these allegations as politically charged and unfounded.
According to executive branch policy, FBI directors are permitted to use government aircraft for travel purposes, which can include taking family or friends on personal trips; however, they are required to reimburse the government for any personal flights taken.
The two representatives noted that after flight records and social media posts revealed Mr. Patel’s use of the jet, he dismissed Special Agent Steven Palmer, who was responsible for overseeing aviation operations within the agency.
The lawmakers accused Mr. Patel of attempting to conceal his activities by preventing public access to tracking databases related to the FBI’s aircraft while continuing to utilize it for personal travel.
This past May, Senate Democrats formally requested that the Government Accountability Office investigate Mr. Patel’s usage of the FBI jet.
The House Democrats emphasized in their letter: “Mr. Patel, these planes are not yours. They belong to the U.S. Government and are funded by American taxpayers.” They criticized him further by stating he embodies corruption that citizens detest and suggested he nickname his government plane ‘The Flying Swamp Monster.’
Mr. Raskin and Ms. Kamlager-Dove have asked for all relevant travel records by December 15th, which should include details about any reimbursements owed and justifications for each passenger’s travel along with communications regarding those trips.
As minority party members of the committee, these two Democrats lack congressional subpoena authority but can still make formal requests for information.
