Investigation into Afghan Refugee’s Background
Top officials from the Trump administration have raised concerns regarding the vetting process of an Afghan refugee accused of fatally shooting two National Guardsmen in Washington, D.C., just before Thanksgiving. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated on ABC’s “This Week” that preliminary findings indicate that Rahmanullah Lakanwal may have been radicalized after his arrival in the United States in 2021.
The 29-year-old Lakanwal, originally from Bellingham, Washington, is charged with killing 20-year-old Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and seriously injuring Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe during an ambush near the White House. Both victims were members of the West Virginia National Guard. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that Lakanwal had been radicalized and assured that further information would be forthcoming.
Emails obtained by authorities revealed that Lakanwal faced significant challenges after resettling in the U.S. with his wife and five young sons. He struggled to find stable employment, did not consistently attend English classes, and experienced periods of isolation coupled with reckless behavior.
Local residents reported that he spent extended periods alone in a darkened room, avoiding contact even with his family. The family was also facing eviction due to unpaid rent earlier this year.
Lakanwal served in a special unit of the Afghan Army known as a Zero Unit, which received support from the CIA. He entered the U.S. through Operation Allies Welcome, a program designed to assist Afghans following the tumultuous withdrawal in 2021. Although he resettled under the Biden administration, he was granted asylum months after Donald Trump took office.
Noem attributed any failures in vetting directly to the Biden administration, claiming that all relevant information was collected during their tenure. In contrast, Democrats have questioned whether there were mishandlings regarding Lakanwal’s case.
Lakanwal allegedly traveled across states to carry out his attack and now faces multiple charges including first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during a violent crime. Additional charges are anticipated as investigations continue.
Sgt. Wolfe remains hospitalized as he fights for recovery. In response to this incident, Trump has pledged to re-evaluate all Afghan refugees admitted over recent years while facing criticism from Democrats who argue he is using this tragedy to unjustly target immigrants without posing any threat.
