Moldovan Airspace Closed After Drone Sightings
Moldovan airspace was temporarily closed for more than an hour on Friday evening when authorities detected two Russian drones flying over the country.
The Moldovan Foreign Ministry confirmed on Saturday that the drones were of Russian origin and had quickly traversed Moldova en route to Ukraine.
This incident marks the third occurrence in recent weeks where Moldovan officials have reported sightings of Russian drones. In response, they condemned these violations and summoned Oleg Ozerov, Russia’s ambassador to Moldova, to address the situation.
The Kremlin has denied any involvement in these incursions, suggesting that such accusations are intended to further strain relations between Russia and Moldova.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has been a vocal critic of Moscow’s actions regarding Ukraine. Over the last three years, she has sought to strengthen ties with other European critics of Russia and aims for Moldova to join the European Union by the decade’s end.
Similar drone incursions have been reported across Europe recently, raising concerns about NATO’s capacity to protect its airspace. In light of these threats, several NATO leaders have suggested establishing a drone defense system designed to intercept hostile drones heading westward.
