Trump’s Decision on South Africa’s G20 Invitation

President Trump announced that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the upcoming 2026 Group of 20 Summit, which is set to take place in Miami. This decision stems from the country’s treatment of a U.S. representative during this year’s summit.

In his statement, Trump declared that all “payments and subsidies” to South Africa would be halted. He emphasized, “Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year.” He criticized South Africa for demonstrating behavior unworthy of international membership.

The G20 is an international forum comprising 19 countries along with the European Union and the African Union. The United States did not send a high-ranking official to this year’s summit held in Johannesburg due to concerns over how white Afrikaners are treated in South Africa. Initially, Vice President J.D. Vance was expected to attend in Trump’s place.

The only U.S. representative present was meant to accept hosting responsibilities for the G20 but faced refusal from South African officials regarding the handover.

Trump expressed serious concerns about human rights abuses against Afrikaners and other descendants of European settlers in South Africa. He stated that these issues were significant enough for the U.S. not to participate in this year’s summit.

The Trump administration has maintained that attacks on white Afrikaner farmers have been overlooked by the South African government. Earlier this year, he granted refugee status to Afrikaners fleeing violence, with some arriving in May.

During a meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House in May, Trump pressed him on these issues. Ramaphosa reportedly hoped for a positive shift in relations between their nations but was taken aback by Trump’s presentation addressing these concerns.

The South African government has dismissed claims of persecution against white Afrikaners as unfounded. The Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation stated that statistics do not support allegations of targeted violent crime against farmers based on race.

The next G20 summit is scheduled for December 2026 at Trump National Doral Miami, his golf resort. In September, Trump claimed there was widespread interest among countries to host the summit at his venue due to its proximity to an airport and assured that it would not be profit-driven.
