Tariff Removal Announcement

President Trump has announced the removal of a 40% tariff on Brazilian coffee, cocoa, beef, and other agricultural goods that are not sufficiently produced in the United States.

This decision is expected to ease concerns regarding rising coffee prices, as Brazil is a significant producer of coffee. This follows a recent initiative aimed at reducing tariffs on grocery items globally to help lower food costs.

The National Coffee Association has welcomed this move, highlighting its positive impact on both coffee consumers and the U.S. economy.

“Two-thirds of American adults drink coffee daily, and every cup will be more affordable thanks to President Trump’s decision to eliminate tariffs on imports from Brazil—the world’s largest coffee producer,” stated NCA President and CEO Bill Murray.

Brazil remains the leading global producer of coffee, supplying about one-third of the U.S. coffee bean market.

In July, Trump had imposed a 40% tariff in addition to an earlier 10% levy on Brazilian imports due to dissatisfaction with Brazil’s social media regulations and the prosecution of former Brazilian leader Jair Bolsonaro, who was an ally of Trump.

The administration is under growing pressure to address rising prices. Democrats recently won significant elections by focusing on affordability issues, especially as the price of a pound of coffee surged by 40% in September compared to the previous year.

In his executive order, Trump mentioned that broader trade discussions with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are still in progress.

Lula expressed his approval of the tariff removal via social media, calling it “a victory for dialogue, diplomacy, and common sense.” He added that while this is a positive step forward, further advancements are necessary: “We will continue this dialogue with President Trump guided by our sovereignty and the interests of Brazilian workers, agriculture, and industry.”
