The incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Thursday in Bella Coola, located approximately 260 miles northwest of Vancouver.

Students from fourth and fifth grades were hiking near British Columbia Highway 20 when the bear struck, as reported by British Columbia Emergency Health Services.

Among the injured, two people sustained critical injuries while another two were seriously hurt. Seven others received treatment at the scene according to provincial health officials.

Veronica Schooner, mother of one student involved, shared that a male teacher bore the brunt of the attack and was airlifted for medical care. She also mentioned that three students suffered significant injuries.

The group was associated with Acwsalcta School, which is run by the Nuxalk Nation. The school announced its closure for Friday on social media, expressing gratitude for their staff and students during this challenging time.

Nuxalk Nation Chief Samuel Schooner expressed deep sorrow for those affected by the incident. He confirmed that all individuals involved are receiving medical assistance and emphasized their safety as a priority.

The identities of those critically and seriously injured have not been disclosed by provincial health officials or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
