Incident Overview

An inmate at a prison in southwestern Virginia has been charged with the murder of a corrections officer and the injury of two others during an attack earlier this week.

John Holomon Russell, 32, is accused of fatally assaulting Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, 40, at approximately 7:53 a.m. on Monday at River North Correctional Center, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections. This facility is located in Independence, Virginia, near the North Carolina border.

Officer Hall was declared dead at a local hospital following the incident. The two other officers involved received treatment for their injuries and have since been released. Specific details regarding their identities or the circumstances surrounding the attack have not been disclosed by the Department of Corrections.

The exact cause of Officer Hall’s death remains unclear, and authorities have not yet announced what charges Russell may face related to this incident. Officer Hall had been employed by the Department of Corrections since April 2024.

Chad Dotson, Director of the Virginia Department of Corrections, expressed condolences stating, “The Virginia Department of Corrections will never stop saying Officer Jeremy Hall’s name, and the people of Virginia should never forget him. As our agency and our public safety heroes at River North Correctional Center continue to process this unspeakable tragedy, please continue to keep Officer Hall’s family and friends in your hearts and minds.”

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin shared his thoughts on social media on Monday: “Suzanne and my prayers are with the family of the officer killed this morning in the line of duty and the other officer injured … The facility is secure and a criminal investigation is underway. God bless all those who risk their lives daily as officers for the Virginia Department of Corrections.”

Russell had previously been sentenced by Fairfax County Circuit Court to 15 years for carjacking in 2017 (with over eight years suspended) along with an additional three years for using a firearm during that crime. He also received a sentence from Albemarle County Circuit Court for shoplifting in 2015 amounting to four years and eight months (with two years suspended), as reported by Virginia corrections officials.
