Potential Challenge in New York

Chi Ossé, a member of the New York City Council and affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, is contemplating a run against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his congressional seat next year.

This move is part of a broader trend where younger, left-leaning candidates are increasingly contesting established Democrats across the nation.

New York’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, also from the Democratic Socialists of America, recently achieved a significant victory in the city’s mayoral race.

In Los Angeles, socialist candidate Rae Huang has declared her intention to run for mayor against incumbent Karen Bass. While Huang seeks to differentiate herself from Mamdani, she is hopeful for an endorsement from her local party following his success.

All three candidates—Ossé, Mamdani, and Huang—are members of the same socialist party. After briefly leaving the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists in 2020 due to differences with its direction, Ossé rejoined this year.

This past Monday, Ossé hinted at a potential congressional bid by responding to comments on social media about needing a dire situation to consider such a run. He remarked, “Seems like we’re in a dire situation.” At just 27 years old and having been elected to the council at 23, he has filed paperwork indicating he is actively exploring this opportunity.

In statements made to Axios, Ossé expressed concerns about current Democratic leadership: “The Democratic Party’s leadership is not only failing to effectively fight back against Donald Trump; they have also failed to deliver a vision that we can all believe in.”

Hakeem Jeffries has faced little opposition in recent primaries, running unopposed in five out of his last seven contests.

While Ossé aligns with Mamdani politically, reports suggest that Mamdani has advised him against challenging Jeffries directly. Notably, Jeffries endorsed Mamdani during his campaign for mayor.
