Intraparty Tensions Rise

House Democrats faced an unusual internal conflict on Tuesday as Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez initiated a vote condemning fellow Democrat Representative Jesús “Chuy” García for allegedly manipulating his succession.

Gluesenkamp Perez, representing Washington, accused García of undermining the electoral process by announcing his retirement after the filing deadline in Illinois. This timing allowed his chief of staff, Patty Garcia, to run unopposed in a district that is solidly Democratic.

“If you’re not going to run, you don’t get to choose your successor,” Gluesenkamp Perez stated, earning applause from Republican members. She emphasized the sacrifices made for the right to elect representatives.

The resolution sparked outrage among other Democrats. Representative Jan Schakowsky described it as shameful, while Representative Delia Ramirez criticized it as a “cheap political stunt.”

The 69-year-old García explained that health concerns and family responsibilities influenced his decision to retire. His cardiologist advised him to focus on his health, and he mentioned caring for his wife, who has multiple sclerosis, and their recently adopted grandson following a family tragedy.

Despite attempts by Democratic leaders to halt the resolution on Monday, Gluesenkamp Perez garnered Republican backing to proceed with the vote on Tuesday. Only one other Democrat, Representative Jared Golden, supported her stance.
