Governor Braun’s Commitment to Redistricting

Indiana Governor Mike Braun expressed on Monday his determination to encourage state Republicans to implement new congressional maps ahead of the midterm elections.

Last week, legislative leaders indicated they did not have sufficient votes to move forward with a redistricting plan backed by former President Trump, leading to frustration from both Braun and Trump.

“I just had a great call with President Trump! I assured him that I am committed to supporting him in passing fair maps in Indiana to ensure the success of the MAGA agenda in Congress,” Braun stated on X. “Indiana’s State Legislators need to show up and publicly vote for fair maps to counteract gerrymandering seen in California and Illinois.”

He criticized the Indiana State Senate for not bringing redistricting proposals to a vote, stating, “Hoosiers deserve transparency from their legislators and should expect them to fulfill their duties instead of hiding away.”

Trump has urged Indiana Republicans to follow suit with other GOP-led states in redrawing district lines to safeguard the party’s narrow majority in the House. His warnings intensified following strong Democratic performances in recent off-year elections, including a California ballot measure that could allow Democrats to gain five House seats.

Democrats are looking to maintain this momentum into the midterms, aiming to flip the House and act as a barrier against Trump during his final two years in office.

Braun convened a special session of the General Assembly late last month aimed at reconsidering Indiana’s congressional district boundaries. However, state Senate Republicans announced on Friday that there was insufficient support among lawmakers for any changes.

In response, Trump stated: “Any Republican who votes against this crucial redistricting effort, which could impact America significantly, should face primary challenges.” He specifically called out Indiana Senate President Rod Bray and Senator Greg Goode as “RINO Senators” while questioning Braun’s leadership despite claiming credit for his election as governor.

The situation escalated later when a local sheriff reported that Senator Goode had been targeted in a swatting incident. Authorities responded after receiving an email warning about potential harm at Goode’s residence; however, it was later confirmed as false.
