Graffiti Discovered on Rock Formations
During the recent government shutdown, vandals took the opportunity to deface rocks in Arches National Park, Utah, with graffiti that prominently features themes from movies and video games.
Allyson Mathis shared her experience with Outside magazine, noting that she observed graffiti depicting characters such as Grug and FNAF during her visit this month.
A retired employee of the National Park Service, Ms. Mathis expressed her dismay, stating, “It was everywhere. It was heartbreaking and upsetting, but unfortunately not surprising.”
The name Grug is associated with a character from the 2013 DreamWorks film The Croods, while FNAF refers to the popular video game and movie franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s.
Additional graffiti included imagery from the online game Among Us, along with smiley faces and handprints, as reported by SFGATE.
The park remained open but was understaffed during the shutdown that concluded on Wednesday. Ms. Mathis remarked that if park rangers had been patrolling, it might have deterred potential vandals.
The National Park Service is currently investigating the incident. According to their website, removing graffiti can be challenging and may require sanding down surfaces, often resulting in permanent discoloration.
Ms. Mathis noted that while most graffiti consists of light scratches that are easily removed, painted graffiti is less common and poses a significant challenge due to its prevalence in this instance.
In addition to graffiti, Ms. Mathis observed other violations of park regulations during her visit, including discarded toilet paper and a dog present on trails where pets are prohibited.
