Stefany Shaheen’s Opposition

Stefany Shaheen, a Democrat from New Hampshire and the daughter of retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, has publicly opposed the government shutdown deal that her mother played a role in creating.

In a statement on social media, Stefany expressed her disapproval: “I cannot support this deal when House Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to even allow a vote to extend health care tax credits. Too many people will see health care costs that are already too high skyrocket even further starting in January. This means more people will be uninsured, unable to see a doctor in times of need and risk bankruptcy because of a diagnosis.”

This stance puts Stefany at odds with her mother, who was among eight Senate Democrats endorsing the shutdown agreement, which lacks provisions for extending federal health care subsidies.

Stefany urged for an end to the shutdown and the extension of subsidies: “Otherwise, no deal.” She is one of several Democrats voicing criticism regarding the agreement.

The new legislation aims to resolve what has become the longest government shutdown in history. In response, Jeanne Shaheen stated that this represents significant progress not previously anticipated. She emphasized her commitment to extending these tax credits and noted that prolonged negotiations with Republicans have shown their unwillingness to address health care issues during shutdown discussions.

Since the government shut down on October 1st, Jeanne Shaheen has advocated for swift action on subsidy extensions. She was instrumental in establishing these subsidies back in 2019.

Democrats have blocked a Republican-supported funding measure passed by the House, insisting on extending enhanced health care subsidies set to expire at year-end; without them, rates are expected to rise significantly. Meanwhile, Republicans have declined negotiations until after the government reopens.

A strong advocate for medical research and innovation, Stefany Shaheen is campaigning in the Democratic primary to succeed Rep. Chris Pappas as he seeks Jeanne Shaheen’s Senate seat.
