A surprising discovery in Neuville-sur-Saone
A man in France has been granted permission to retain a remarkable find of gold valued at over $800,000.
The individual, residing in Neuville-sur-Saone, located approximately 280 miles southeast of Paris, unearthed the gold while preparing his garden for a swimming pool installation in May. The town council confirmed on Wednesday that he is allowed to keep the treasure he discovered, as reported by Agence France-Presse.
The treasure comprised five gold bars and numerous coins, all wrapped in plastic bags, according to sources from local media outlet Le Progres. The man chose to remain anonymous but promptly reported his find to the local authorities.
Following the discovery, French archaeological officials and law enforcement were involved to assess whether the gold held any archaeological value or if it had been stolen. This determination would affect its ownership status.
The gold bars featured unique identification numbers. Authorities concluded that the gold was not stolen and confirmed that the bars were produced 15 to 20 years ago at a nearby refinery before being legally obtained, as stated by Le Progres.
The origins of how this gold ended up in the garden remain unclear. The previous owner of the property has passed away, according to statements from the Neuville-sur-Saone town council.
