Conservative Concerns Over Pelosi’s Successor

Conservatives celebrating former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s retirement after four decades in Congress might want to reconsider their enthusiasm.

The leading candidate to take over from the prominent San Francisco Democrat is Scott Wiener, a three-term state senator and former city supervisor who declared his candidacy just two weeks prior to Pelosi’s announcement that she would not seek reelection.

Pelosi’s decision has shifted attention to Mr. Wiener, who is recognized as one of the most effective state legislators in the country when it comes to advancing progressive legislation on contentious issues like transgender rights and gender transition for minors.

His legislative accomplishments have garnered him significant support from the left while also attracting criticism from conservative factions.

The Human Rights Campaign has hailed Mr. Wiener as a “tireless champion of LGBTQ issues,” while billionaire Elon Musk has labeled him an “utter scumbag.”

“This is the man who’s written 75% of California’s controversial laws regarding gender, housing, climate, crime, and transportation,” remarked Houman David Hemmati, a political commentator based in Los Angeles. “Wiener poses a clear threat to both the state and the nation.”

Sophia Lorey, outreach director for the conservative California Family Council, criticized Mr. Wiener’s record as “the most anti-woman, anti-family, and anti-safety agenda I have ever seen from a state legislator.” She emphasized that voters should be aware of his history as he campaigns for Congress.

Despite opposition, Mr. Wiener appears well-positioned for success. He recently received an endorsement from California Attorney General Rob Bonta, who praised his willingness to tackle challenging issues.

The 55-year-old Harvard Law School graduate is known for championing controversial bills such as:

  • HIV Transmission (2017): Senate Bill 239 reduced penalties for knowingly transmitting HIV from felony to misdemeanor.
  • Sex Offender Registry (2019): SB 145 allowed judges discretion on whether men convicted of consensual sex with minors should be listed on sex offender registries.
  • Transgender Inmates (2000): SB 132 mandated housing inmates according to their gender identity.
  • Prostitution (2022): SB 357 repealed loitering laws aimed at prostitution but complicated efforts to protect minors from trafficking.

This year’s SB 107 provided protections for families seeking gender transition treatments in California against out-of-state legal actions while allowing courts emergency jurisdiction over minors seeking gender-affirming care. Additionally, SB 627 prohibited law enforcement agencies from wearing extreme masks during operations.

While not all of Mr. Wiener’s proposals have succeeded—his attempt last year to permit children aged 12 and older to receive vaccinations without parental consent failed—he continues pushing forward with new initiatives aimed at safeguarding transgender rights amidst national scrutiny.
