Defense Secretary Issues Stark Warning
On Saturday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a strong message regarding Chinese military aggression in the South China Sea during a meeting with Southeast Asian defense ministers.
He highlighted troubling activities such as “intimidation, harassment, and illegal actions within sovereign waters across the South China Sea,” noting that these aggressive behaviors have escalated in recent months.
The comments prompted a phone call from President Trump later that day, leading Hegseth to soften his stance, seemingly at the president’s request. This comes as the White House is actively working to enhance trade and diplomatic relations with Beijing.
In a post on his personal X account, Hegseth stated: “I just spoke to President Trump, and we agree — the relationship between the United States and China has never been better.” He referenced Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea as well as his discussions with Chinese Defense Minister Adm. Dong Jun in Malaysia, which have contributed to a more conciliatory tone.
Hegseth emphasized that both he and Adm. Dong concurred on the importance of peace, stability, and good relations between their nations. He quoted Trump’s historic “G2 meeting” as pivotal for fostering lasting peace and success for both countries.
The Defense Department is expected to adopt a less confrontational strategy under policies termed “peace through strength, mutual respect, and positive relations,” according to Hegseth.
He also mentioned plans for military-to-military communication channels aimed at resolving issues amicably and scheduling further meetings.
“God bless both China and the USA!”, he concluded his post.
During the ASEAN meeting, Hegseth condemned China’s military tactics aimed at intimidating regional allies. He criticized their placement of weapons on disputed islands falsely claimed as nature preserves.
“You don’t put [weapons] platforms on a nature preserve,” he remarked, labeling these actions as attempts to coerce territorial claims at others’ expense.
He asserted that such provocations reflect a disregard for regional nations’ sovereignty by challenging their territorial rights.
