Strong Start for Maryland in Buzz Williams Era
In their season opener, Maryland showcased a promising performance, securing an 83-61 victory over Coppin State. The game was highlighted by impressive contributions from freshmen and a notable three-point shooting display in the first half.
Redshirt freshman Andre Mills made an immediate impact, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the first half. Leading all scorers was Pharrel Payne, who shot efficiently and finished with 21 points, including six of eight from the field. Payne scored 15 of those points after halftime, helping Maryland maintain control despite a slow shooting start after the break.
The game marked a significant moment as Maryland started three true freshmen — Darius Adams, Del Pino, and Mills — the first such lineup since 2018. Coach Buzz Williams praised their ruggedness and physicality, emphasizing Mills’ role on both ends of the court.
Darius Adams, who led the team at the foul line with 10-of-12 shooting, scored 16 points. Adams highlighted the importance of playing inside-out to generate easy scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, guard Isaiah Watts, wearing a protective mask due to injury, contributed early with a three-pointer that helped establish an initial lead.
The Terrapins relied heavily on outside shooting early on, attempting nine of their first fourteen shots from beyond the arc—a strategy influenced by inexperience but also necessary given lineup adjustments. Coach Williams acknowledged this approach might not be sustainable long-term but was understandable given circumstances.
Coppin State’s Khali Horton led with 19 points but struggled with turnovers throughout the game. Maryland’s defense improved after halftime; a decisive run of 17-4 powered by Payne’s nine points sealed their victory as they pulled away late in the second half.
The Terrapins will next face Georgetown in a rivalry renewal scheduled for Friday night in College Park, aiming to build on this opening win and continue developing their young roster.
