Trump Advocates for Ending the Filibuster

Former President Trump has intensified his calls to abolish the filibuster in the Senate, warning that doing so could lead to significant losses for Republicans in upcoming elections. He expressed concern that if the Senate procedure remains unchanged, Democrats might secure victories in both midterm and presidential races.

The government shutdown reached its 35th day on Tuesday, tying the record for the longest shutdown in history. No signs of resolution have emerged, and this shutdown surpasses even the one during Trump’s first term.

In a series of social media posts, Trump argued that Democrats are more likely to win future elections if the filibuster remains intact. He called for what he terms the “Nuclear Option”—a move to eliminate the filibuster—to enable Republicans to pass laws on election security, gender policies in sports, Second Amendment rights, and border security without obstruction.

The former president warned that a Democratic victory could lead to major shifts such as changes to the Supreme Court, a Democratic-controlled Senate, and statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington D.C., which would increase electoral votes.

Trump emphasized that Democrats are likely to end the filibuster once they have enough power. He pointed out past attempts by Democrats to remove it and suggested that most Republicans oppose ending this rule now.

The current rule requires at least 60 senators’ support to proceed with legislation. The use of the filibuster has blocked multiple bills, including a stopgap spending measure related to Obamacare subsidies set to expire this year.

In bold statements, Trump urged Republicans to terminate the filibuster immediately, end ongoing shutdowns, and push through policies they have long advocated for. He claimed this would make their party unbeatable and described it as a strategic move towards dominance.

Despite Trump’s strong stance, most Republican members oppose dismantling the filibuster, highlighting internal divisions within the party regarding this procedural change.
